GERMAN LANGUAGE LESSONS WITH BRIGITTE.

My name is Brigitte Arnold and I instruct German as a Foreign Language. Although I’m originally from Germany, I have lived in the canton of Solothurn since 2010. I instruct German at further education institutions and in companies in Switzerland at CEFR proficiency levels A1 to B2.

I support participants to learn German to prepare for DAF, DaZ, telc, and Goethe examinations. My goal is to meet each and every learner where they are, to encourage them to use the German language in their professional and personal everyday life outside the language class, and to give them maximal support in achieving their personal goals.

In the early stages, learners often think they should speak German only if they are sure not to make any mistakes. This is why they prefer not to speak up in German class, and as a result, not in the foreign language of German in your company either. This is where I come in. I purposely involve each individual, value their input, and encourage them to speak up and become involved at some point.

This is how it often turns out that each and every learner has very specific German skills of which they had previously no idea. One is a very good reader, the next has a feeling for articles, the third intuitively conjugates verbs, and so on. Once the participants are aware of their special skill, they often dare to do more and more. And mistakes suddenly become secondary.

About me.

INSTRUCTOR OF GERMAN AS A FOREIGN LANGUAGE.

My training as a fide language course instructor in the field of integration (fide Sprachkursleiter im Integrationsbereich) and practical work as a German teacher build on 30 years of professional experience as a management assistant in international industrial companies. My decision to shift my professional focus to teaching was based on a long-held desire to help people grow. Lifelong learning as the basis for personal advancement is not only my own aspiration, but also my message to my participants in German classes in Switzerland.

My work in industrial companies has provided me knowledge of the needs of companies that wish to support their employees to learn German. Their goal is to improve communication in the workplace and to ensure, for instance, a better understanding of work instructions, work safety, and quality. My many years of experience in companies also enable me to adapt to the professional situation of my participants within a very short time and to give the German lessons a strong practical orientation.

LANGUAGE COURSES FOR COMPANIES & INDIVIDUALS.

My German classes are based on empathy and appreciation. I strongly orient my German language courses to the individual needs of participants. I always have an eye on the goal of the course, methodology, and the necessary curriculum. I compose lessons according to needs, based on elements of established teaching methods (fide, Go, Callan) and classic teaching materials (print and online). When requested, I also include internal documents such as safety instructions in German courses for business and industrial enterprises.

I also offer individuals online German instruction at various proficiency levels to improve their German language skills for professional or personal reasons, to prepare for an exam for a language certificate, or as a conversation class to refresh existing skills or to refine speaking skills. Online instruction (Teams, Zoom, Skype) offers a good deal of flexibility when learning German and can also be planned to take place during off-peak times.

LEARN GERMAN IN SWITZERLAND.

Below, you’ll find an overview of the various classes I offer.

Depending on the needs of the company and the level of knowledge of the participants, my focus is on conversation in German as a Foreign Language. This means taking away the shyness of participants to take part in discussions. Or I concentrate on reading skills, understanding text, and brushing up on German grammar so that they can then understand company documents or start continuing vocational training without additional effort. The concept for the German lessons is created in consultation with the respective company, and the further procedure is discussed in joint feedback rounds. I align the materials accordingly. Homework is voluntary, but contributes significantly to learning success.

In the first semester of continuing vocational training, participants with insufficient German language skills are given the opportunity to take part in a German course. The costs of the course are covered by the Swiss canton. In these German language lessons, the focus is on reading skills, understanding text, and refreshing German grammar. The German lessons follow a concept I have created and which I constantly adapt to the needs of the participants with the help of feedback rounds. Lessons are activity-oriented and focused on learning to take responsibility for one’s own learning. I design the materials accordingly. Homework is voluntary, but contributes significantly to learning success.

After a trial lesson, I suggest learning materials in online and/or print format suited to the level (A1, A2, B1, B2) and professional background of the participant. In addition, I provide the learner with customized learning materials and documents. In regular feedback sessions, we discuss the further course of action. To guarantee progress, it is expected that the participant additionally complete homework.

After a trial lesson, depending on the CEFR proficiency level (A1, A2, B1, B2) and professional background of learners, I suggest instructional materials in online and/or print formats. In addition, I provide learners with documents and materials I have created myself and that are tailored to their needs. In regular feedback sessions, we discuss further steps and actions. To ensure progress, the participant is expected to complete homework in addition to participating in class.

After a trial lesson, depending on the examination (fide, telc, Goethe), I suggest the number of necessary lessons (instructional units) along with appropriate teaching materials for learning German – in online and/or print formats. In addition, I provide practice exams and materials tailored to learners. To ensure the desired success, it is necessary that participants complete self-study assignments in addition to participating in class.

Conversation courses can be based entirely on the wishes of participants. Alternatively, in every lesson, I provide a choice of current topics, including current events in Switzerland. Based on the topics covered, questions about German grammar can also be worked on in a fun and hands-on way.
